1. INTRODUCTION

Searching the Web, we realized that many people look for lists and reviews to decide which tool to choose when creating their website to promote their company, products or services.

It is no different when dealing with websites in the segment publisher (blogs for publishers), as there are so many platform options on the market that it is unfeasible to waste time testing everything, and this ends up confusing users' heads when creating their website to place their copywrite content.

In addition to being confusing and lacking time, everything demands study, and it's amazing how, in the middle of 2023, many platforms remain complex to work with. It doesn't matter if you have years of experience with Wordpress, Joomla or even Wix, the next platform you choose to tinker with on your own will feature some individual novelty, mixing code with user-friendly interfaces, or you will find new bugs / hacks that you will have to adapt. Not to mention that you will need to know a minimum of design to create a nice layout for your users. Well, there are endless mistakes that occur when we talk about web design, and this is normal, since the internet is constantly evolving and not all people want to become web designers to be able to create a blog and write about the subjects they dominate!

Anyway, after this little preamble about the difficulties we encounter on the web in terms of platforms, we are going to list below the opinion of experienced web designers on the 5 most relevant blog platforms on the market in 2023, so that you can draw your own conclusions right away of choosing a tool to create your blog.

I also think it is worth mentioning that over 10 years of experience, we have already tested all the platforms that we will mention in this list and it was due to some frustrations that we created Interago, our own platform aimed at the public. publisher. You are even reading this article that was written on this same platform.

2. WORDPRESS PLATFORM:

Wordpress is the most relevant content management platform on the market. It is an open source tool built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.

It has been updated for years for various purposes, such as creating institutional sites, blogs, e-commerce, product catalogs, among others.

The fact that it is a platform with more than 19 years of existence also helps, because many people have already cooperated to create functionalities and plugins that add to the robustness of the manager, so if you need, for example, to follow the results with Tag Manager and Google Analytics , there are ready-made integrations to download from GitHub or buy from the plugin store.

And many difficulties to work on the platform have already been explored by the community, so if you come across an error / difficulty in WordPress, you will probably find a solution on Stack Overflow.

OK, but so what? It has some stability in the market, has a strong community and many plugins available to meet any need, but these characteristics end up becoming major problems when using WordPress.

Imagine that you only need a simple platform to write your texts, publish everything online and share it on social networks, and to do this you hire a professional to install Wordpress for you. Just the fact that you need to hire hosting, install the platform, set up the layout of the entire site and even do a sporadic follow-up to install platform updates already shows that you are hiring an aircraft to meet the need to go to the bakery.

WordPress is extremely robust and this makes day-to-day operations very complex, you know?

Of course, the solution is suitable for several large portals, and we are not saying that WordPress is not a good tool, but depending on your objective, it is much simpler for you to buy something ready to just sit at your computer, open your dashboard and write in peace, avoiding headaches with security issues, updates, platform lag, hosting, etc.

So, see the list we put together with the advantages and disadvantages that we found in the experience of creating websites with WordPress.

Advantages:

  1. It's a widespread platform with a large database, so if you come across an error, Google it and you'll find someone who has already gone through the same and has a solution;

  2. It has a large number of people who have contributed to the development of many free and paid plugins, so you can find ready-made themes, management add-ons, SEO add-ons, results tracking, etc.;

  3. It has a friendly interface to manage the content, where it has a WYSIWYG text editor (don't know what this acronym is? Basically you write your texts inside an editor similar to WORD, and the way you diagram your text is exactly how it will look on the site) among other facilitators within a gigantic scope of more than 55 thousand plugins;

  4. If you want a robust solution, Wordpress can meet your needs as it is very customizable.

Disadvantages:

  1. Wordpress can have vulnerability issues if you don't keep the platform up to date, as well as third-party plugins.

  2. As there are many people developing tools for Wordpress, with the best of intentions, it is easy to get caught installing a plugin that was done incorrectly, and this can end up compromising the performance of your site, leaving it slow, with layout errors in between. others, and search engines will evaluate all these questions when ranking your project in searches;

  3. As the platform is very customizable, if you don't have development experience, you will probably need to pay for an experienced professional to do sporadic maintenance of your platform;

  4. If you need unique and tailored features for your company, then you may encounter problems, as creating functionality within Wordpress can be quite complex and expensive, and you will need to find a very experienced professional to do this development consistently;

  5.  And finally, one of the biggest occurrences during these 10 years that we have experience with Webdesign and that still happens. People arrive desperate to update their platforms because of quackery. Well, as Wordpress is easy to install and add a template, it ends up being common to find a person who claims to be a professional to create a Wordpress, and who will then end up disappearing, without providing proper maintenance for the platform. Therefore, it is easy to end up losing an entire project due to a situation like this.

Now that we've had a rundown on WordPress, let's move on to the next platform that could be your choice for blogging in 2023.

3. BLOGGER PLATFORM

Blogger-interface Image

You've no doubt found yourself reading an article where the website URL was "sitename.blogspot.com". Well, you were on a site where the content management system was Blogger.

Blogger is a very simple and easy option for users, as it offers a very rigid and limited environment for a writing team, and don't think that an environment with these characteristics is bad.

When we are in a constrained environment, we have fewer options to "make mistakes", ensuring that we have a longer project life.

Okay, but let's talk a little bit about the history of Blogger.

The platform was created in 1999 and was acquired by Google in 2003, since then it has been updated by it.

The fact that Blogger is maintained by Google is the biggest difference between it and WordPress, because Blogger is not an open source platform, so you will use resources pre-stipulated by Google and in case of doubts you will be able to access the updated documentation.

And although Blogger is from a private company, it is free and has the advantage of coming with native features to use Google AdSense.

Another important feature that we should point out is that the domain blogspot.com no longer exists, as it has been changed to "googleblog.com", so you can already deduce that the addresses of sites with this domain were created in Blogger.

The languages that make up the Blogger system we cannot know for sure, but we have evidence of JavaScript, HTML5, Java and C++, which are the pre-approved languages to be used in Google software.

Now let's discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the platform:

Advantages:

  1. Blogger is a free platform with a very friendly interface, so it's easy for you to start everything from scratch and alone, with your Google account and without spending any resources other than time.

  2. Blogger is plastered even in design, but it provides an interesting range of templates, so you can choose something pre-made made by professionals, as if you were going to assemble a powerpoint and later, with more experience, you can edit colors, fonts and even even create a custom (CSS) style sheet.

  3. Well, everything is maintained by Google, so you have the guarantee that it is safe, it will be in the cloud and always working (we have a blog, which we used to write posts for friends, it is more than 10 years old and still working ).

  4. Blogger also has an optimized editor, just like WORD, which makes it easy and intuitive to write your posts.

  5. You have a user-friendly environment to see the performance statistics of your posts, you will be able to manage user comments and see Google Adsense earnings.

  6. In case of doubt, it is easy to find solutions, since the platform is old and therefore has a large database to consult and also official documentation maintained by Google.

Disadvantages:

  1. For businesses that demand purposes beyond simple pages with posts, Blogger may fall short;

  2. The plastering of the tool's layout ends up limiting its users, so if you want to make a deeper customization, such as changing the header of your website, changing the footer, creating a CTA, creating a landing page with a different design, among others other features you will not get;

  3. Still in relation to the plaster, Blogger can limit you if you need to work with advanced SEO features;

  4. As Blogger is a Google tool, you will always have an ownership inconsistency, because your address will not really be yours, for example. So, for example, if we buy blogdaecowebdesign.com.br at Registro.br, this address will be our property, registered in our cnpj, different from blogdaeco.googleblog.com, which is a subdomain within the Google environment;

  5. And the last disadvantage is that because the platform is owned by Google, we are subject to the company's decisions. So there is always a risk that one day it will be decided to discontinue Blogger and close the platform, deleting content from various blogs.

4. JOOMLA PLATFORM

joomla-interface image

Well, when we research content management platforms, a third alternative is Joomla!

As reported by the community itself, Joomla! is a free and open-source platform, so just like WordPress, Joomla! it is maintained by several volunteer developers and has a large community of people who enjoy the platform and help to update it. It is also multilingual and used around the world.

The platform was built in 2005 using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP and the fact that the platform is available for download for us to install wherever we want, is what grants us the freedom to customize the source code and even create custom modules according to our needs. .

Another important characteristic that we should point out is that Joomla is in its 4th version and can be used to, in addition to a blog, create a product catalogue, e-commerce, institutional websites, among others.

Well, that being said, I believe we can summarize Joomla as a platform that competes with WordPress and works on the same dynamics.

And like all platforms, it has its advantages and disadvantages, which we will point out below:

Advantages:

  1. If you have advanced technical skills in the area, Joomla can be a good alternative, as it has e-commerce features, product catalog and other features that can be added to your blog project;

  2. Joomla is flexible for source-level customizations;

  3. In the extensions store, you can find more than 1500 plugins, so you can install a WYSIWYG editor to make changes to your website with a friendly interface, you can install translations among other resources;

  4. Joomla extensions are more reliable, as there aren't many amateur developers devising new tools for the platform;

  5. Joomla is an old platform and also has a lot of content made available by the community, in case you have questions.

Disadvantages:

  1. Like WordPress, you are free to edit even the core of the platform, however, you run security risks if you don't keep your platform and extensions up to date;

  2. Joomla is not a platform for amateurs, so if you don't have the technical specifics to work with the platform, it will end up costing you to hire experienced technicians capable of providing a qualified workforce;

  3. You will need an infrastructure (hosted server) that has above-average resources to maintain your platform, which can be heavy, depending on how it is developed;

  4. Although we mention that there are more than 1500 plugins to be installed, Joomla leaves something to be desired in terms of design. The amount of visual theme options for the platform is much less than WordPress.

We have already mentioned the three platforms that would be the most popular for creating a blog, and now we are going to explore tools that are not necessarily aimed at the public. publisher, but that fit as temporary alternatives, depending on your goal.

Well, let's talk about the famous WIX!

5. WIX PLATFORM

interface-wix image
WIX Management Dashboard Image

WIX is a CMS whose main objective is to provide a friendly interface for its users to be able to assemble website designs by dragging and dropping elements.

The company is private and was founded in 2006, it is Israeli and had its public capital in 2007 and it was in 2011 that versions of WIX in other languages were launched, which ended up giving a boom in popularity. I'm sure you've gotten some hype from them showing how easy it would be to create a website within the platform.

Well, we were bombarded with these ads, probably because it was the company's target audience, and it was at this time that the tool became quite popular.

On WIX, you can create a free account to set up your blog, however, you will be limited in terms of several features, which to access, you will need to purchase a monthly plan.

And we can't deny it, the platform is well made and has a lot of things ready, so you have the Drag'n Drop editor to pull your design from there to here, it has a little shop of extensions to place functionalities inside your website, it has an environment optimized for SEO, performance reports and hundreds of other things.

However, the biggest obstacle we found when we carried out a test on the platform was the old and well-known cast. You are limited to the resources that are made available to you, and you will not have access to your website code.

This ends up being a very limiting factor if you want to add functionality and create individual features that fit just for your business.

Another issue that happens a lot is that WIX ends up promising that anyone can make a website, and this is true, but without experience and study, it is very difficult to put together a professional website project that passes a positive image of your brand, and the same goes for a professional blog.

A large news portal, such as CNN, BBC, Fox News, among others, has its own business characteristics, and it is because of this that a project made in WIX may not meet specific needs. We at Eco Webdesign have already developed Blog projects, which were very relevant, with more than 30 million monthly accesses, so we have an idea of what needs to be done for certain types of situations.

Now let's point out the advantages and disadvantages of setting up a project in WIX:

Advantages:

  1. You will be in an environment created in the cloud, safe, stable and sporadically updated with the latest technologies available on the web;

  2. If you don't have experience with web design, and want to have a small blog, you can set up your project in WIX, using templates and the drag and drop system to create your design;

  3. You don't have to worry about codes and technical skills;

  4. The management environment is friendly and intuitive, where you will be able to browse reports, monetize your posts, among other features;

  5. They provide an extensions store, so you can implement more advanced features on your blog;

  6. To write your posts, you can use rich text editors, which are interfaces similar to writing texts in WORD.

Disadvantages:

  1. You will be limited to a plastered environment, so you need to use the templates and functions predefined by WIX;

  2. Another disadvantage is the "binding" that WIX performs on its users, so if you buy your domain through them and set up Google Workspace, leaving this environment later to create something bigger will be very stressful;

  3. Support may be lacking in cases that require specialized technical assistance, and your demand may end up taking a long time to be resolved;

  4. You will be dependent on a private company, so similar to Blogger, if they ever decide to discontinue and close everything, your content is at risk of being lost.

6. TUMBLR PLATFORM

tumblr-interface image
Image of the Tumblr interface when posting

Tumblr is a "microblogging" platform and its environment resembles a social network, so it fits very well for people who want to share publications, in a simple and friendly environment in which the objective is exactly to disseminate posts among everyone who is curious about reading and writing proactivity.

Tumblr's history is long, but we can summarize that the platform was quite successful until 2016, the year in which the term "tumblr photos", which was used to refer to images with a visual standard that was started on the platform itself, became became quite popular.

Although Tumblr's popularity has cooled somewhat, many people still use it to express artistic content such as poems, images and videos.

Therefore, Tumblr is extremely simple and niche, you create your account and you can start posting your content, which will be sent to an initial screen of feeds where several people will be following.

Advantages:

  1. It's an easy solution, where in less than 10 minutes you can create your account and spread your art to the world;

  2. You can set up your account without paying anything;

  3. Thousands of people will be seeing your content, without it being necessary to do an improved work of dissemination so that your posts reach a large audience and be spread over the internet;

  4. It can be a very interesting solution for artists who want to receive feedback on their creations.

Disadvantages:

  1. It is not a platform for publishers de hard news and who want to monetize through AdSense;

  2. It is plastered and you will be limited to functionalities and resources predefined by the platform itself;

  3. It's a niche platform for art, so if you offer mechanic services, it definitely won't serve your goals;

  4. Just like WIX and Blogger, their content will be in the cloud and is liable to be deleted without prior notice, if they decide to end the platform.

Cool, but what about Eco Webdesign? It's very common to be asked why we don't use any of these platforms already widespread in the market to do what we love, which is creating beautiful responsive websites that get results.

7. INTERACTION

As we mentioned in the introduction, we already have 10 years of experience and we have been through several situations with platforms, hosting and promises of solutions that, in the end, did not meet our needs and that of our customers, and it was because of this that we developed Interago , our own digital experience platform.
